The other day I spent an enjoyable couple hours playing some games on Facebook. I know, not very “productive.” Right?
Wrong. I actually accomplished quite a bit.
First, I took time out for ME and what I enjoy doing. It was relaxing. We all know if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy, right? So I invested in some making momma happy time. Often we as moms/dads/parents forget to do that or feel guilty doing so. That is just horse pockey I say! If we can’t live a balanced life and enjoy ourselves, how are we supposed to teach our kids to do so? Yes, thank you. I do have a good point.
Second, I realized that these games have some life lessons built right in. Yes they actually do.
How?
I am glad you asked. I am going to reveal these lessons in a short series of posts.
Today’s lesson demonstrated by Facebook games: Failure is an option and is acceptable.
In games, you get multiple “lives” to assist you through navigating a level. Why? Because there is a learning curve. There are hidden traps along the way you can only discover by experience. There are strategies that need to be discovered, and they change with each level. If the game were all or nothing, then it would be nothing for most of us. It is only through trial and error (failure) that we learn, change our strategies, attempt and repeat until we navigate that level successfully.
Guess what, the same goes for life. Somehow, we have built up this notion that failure is bad. But in reality, it is only through failure we become observant, learn from mistakes, create a strategy, attempt strategy and assess if it was successful. If not, we make adjustments. Repeat as necessary. In other words we learn and grow. Then success is all the more sweet.
However, if we always succeeded the first time around, we would lose out on valuable lessons, character building, and growth. We would have a false sense of reality. The worst result is that we would be bored!
So instead of seeing failure as “bad,” change your perspective and realize it for what it truly is – opportunity to learn, grow, and eventually, kick reality in the teeth! Then savor the sweetness of victory!
